For veteran Washingtonians, if you weren’t at The Meridian Ball on Friday night, you were probably out of town –  no one would miss this annual event on purpose.A mainstay of the international set, the event attracts as many foreign languages as there are countries.  Such was the case on Friday night at one of Washington’s most prestigious events.

“This is Washington, this is what Washington does,” former Congressman Jim Moran told Hollywood on the Potomac. “Up in New York on Wall Street, they’re financiers; here they’re people that talk about foreign policy.”

The Ball is known for intimate Ambassador-hosted dinners preceding the main event after which guests gather for dancing, dessert, and dialogue at Meridian House, an architectural treasure listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Ball is well attended by an eclectic mix of public officials including Cabinet secretaries, Supreme Court justices, and members of the U.S. Congress, as well as prominent media figures, foreign ambassadors, and representatives from the international business and cultural communities.

“You don’t need to spend a lot of money to go to a DC fancy party,” Washingtonian’s Kate Bennett explained.  “You just have to be creative and have some personal style.”

Each year the Ball plays a key role in helping Meridian generate awareness of and support for its mission. Proceeds from the Ball support Meridian’s global leadership exchanges, cultural activities, conferences, and seminars.

Hollywood on the Potomac chatted with former Cong. Jim Moran (D.VA), H.E. The Amb. of Denmark,  journalist Roland Flamini, REVAMP photographer Danny Swartz, Washingtonian’s Kate Bennett, Marie Royce – Congressional Co-Chair, Kevin Chaffee of Washington Life, and a former Washington Post journalist:
