“The Dukes of Hazzard” star Ben Jones teamed up with Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) on July 4th (shown above) for The Save Historic Arlington House event at The Robert E. Lee Memorial located at Arlington Cemetery.
Best known as the mechanic on the show which ran on CBS from 1979 t0 1985, Jones actually ended up in Congress representing Georgia’s 4th District as a Democrat from 1988 to 1992 and actually challenged Gingrich for reelection. “I never enjoyed anything more than that race against Newt Gingrich,” Jones told NPR’s All Things Considered host Guy Raz at the time. “Even though,” he said, “Gingrich beat us like a rented mule.”
He currently resides in Virginia where he owns and operates, with his wife Alma Viator, “Cooter’s Place” a memorabilia store commemoration “The Dukes of Hazzard “ show replete with General Lee replicas, Dukes merchandise and daily airings of Dukes episodes which sometimes draws crowds numbering in the thousands. Therein lies the Virginia connection.
