Politics, Karate & Chewbacca!

What President Harry S. Truman said was:  “You want a friend in Washington? Get a dog.” Not Chewbacca!  That seemed to be lost on guests at the ‘T’was the Thirteenth Night Before Christmas’ blast hosted at the home of political operatives Sara and Ron Bonjean who readily cozied up to their new BFF Chewie – as he-her-it is affectionately called by Star Wars fans.

And no, Chewbacca was not the surprise mystery guest, although he-she-it could have been; nor was the Cat from Broadway’s hit series “Cats” dressed up as “Mr. Mistoffelees” who shadowed Brian Walsh – Ron’s business partner at Rokk Solutions – as is the annual tradition, although he-she-it could have been.

We’re not sure why the Vegas showgirls were there.  The same could be said for Benjamin Franklin and guests dressed up as peanut butter and jelly and bacon and eggs, but they kept the guests…..well, guessing…..until the real mystery guest showed up.

The real mystery guest was Ralph Macchio, a.k.a. “The Karate Kid.”  We gave Macchio a pass when we asked him what Hollywood celebrities were backing which candidates since he lives in New York now. “I stay out of having media discussions on politics,” he told Hollywood on the Potomac.  “The challenge I find is the politically correct artificiality of certain candidates and the tabloid grabbing sound-bytes of other candidates. Somewhere, hopefully in the middle, we’ll have options that we’re comfortable with.”  Fair enough.

In between Lasagna and shrimp, guests spent their time drooling over Macchio, an incredibly good looking ‘kid’ who was equally as engaging.

OK, so yes, we asked Ralph a stupid question: Can you still raise your leg like that?  “At the time, I did,” he responded,  “but I’d slip a disk now, so I do Dancing with the Stars.” Macchio is currently in an off-Broadway show:  “It’s called A Room of My Own and it will be at the Abingdon Theater Company on 36th Street with Mario Cantone and myself. Our dates are, I believe, February 19th through March 13th. Those are probably the only two names that you would know, but the cast is great. We’ll start in a little small house, but there are ideas to do maybe a TV pilot or film from it, because it has great characters.”

Speaking of leg up….

Normally, the Bonjeans wake up to a bunch of hung over guests camping out under the tent, but probably not this year. Politicos and journalists had early flights to Las Vegas for the CNN debates.
