In the Best Picture category for The 88th Academy Awards 2016 that will take place on Sunday, February 28, today we cover ROOM.  “A young woman who has been held in captivity in a small shed for seven years tries to make as normal a life as she can for her five-year-old son, Jack, who knows her only as ‘Ma.’ When Ma and Jack escape their captor, Old Nick, they must cope with the outside world and forge relationships with Ma’s conflicted family.” Oscars   The movie stars Brie Larson, Joan Allen, William H. Macy, Jacob Tremblay.

Here’s the take:  It’s a story only too familiar to those who followed the Cleveland kidnapping case when Ariel Castro imprisoned three young women.  You wonder how this can happen. Why couldn’t they find a way out?  In the case of ROOM, the ‘prison’ was a pretty flimsy shack. Where were the neighbors?  How is it possible that someone can get away with this?  How can you possibly mentally survive such an ordeal?  The mind is an incredible thing and in ROOM, mind over matter triumphs to the extent that it can in circumstances like this.

En fin:  It’s exactly the kind of film that Hollywood on the Potomac likes.  For us though, it falls short in a few ways.  Although we get the point of the main part of the film that exists in ROOM, it was a bit long and tedious while driving the point – which explains itself in the latter part of the film, so we do get it.  Secondarily, we would have liked to see a little more closure with some of the important characters such as William Macy’s role.  We are taking it out of the winners circle although loved it.
