“The Right to Bear Arts” is the newest battle cry of The Creative Coalition as 2017 begins and the United States adapts to a President who was once as much a part of Hollywood circles as he was the business world. The notion is simple for the nonpartisan charity of the arts and entertainment community: Arts education and funding is a cause that needs to be protected and nurtured.

Creative Coalition members think that it is simply black and white. Arts education benefits youth and their communities, gives a creative outlet to kids and helps to build our national culture. What better way to help color in the lines of national culture than a gala supporting the arts on the night of a Presidential Inauguration.

The fête, hosted at the Harman Center for the Arts, featured cocktails, the fanciest of finger foods, a program extolling the virtues of America’s artistic endeavors, and a special performance by Grammy-winner Blues Traveler.

On hand, beyond a smattering of DC VIPs, were actors like Tim Daly (“Madam Secretary”), Cheryl Hines (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”), Tim Allen (“Last Man Standing”), Dean Norris (“Breaking Bad”), Geoffrey Arend (“Madam Secretary”), Christina Hendricks (“Mad Men”), and Mae Whitman (“Parenthood”).

Hollywood on the Potomac caught up with a few of The Creative Coalition’s ambassadors and spoke with them about what it means to be an actor and represent the creative arts, and if they could trace back their interest in the arts to a specific moment.
