”This event would not be possible without the incredible food community of DC. Chef Scott Drewno and all of his culinary friends come out on a Sunday morning, after working til the wee hours of Saturday night are really incredible,” McFly said.
“Breast Cancer Bites is really about obviously spreading awareness but also supporting a cause that supports action in the fight against Breast Cancer. The GW Mammo-Van hits the streets everyday saving lives.” The Georgetown Washington University Mobile Mammography Unit is an organization that was created to help women detect breast cancer in its early stages.
It also provides education and support to women within the DC Metropolitan area. The program started in 1996 with the help of the Cancer Research Foundation of America. Since it’s a mobile unit, it travels to various corporates and community units daily to offer screenings. The great aspect of this program is being able to provide this service to women, regardless of her financial status. The program includes a state-of-the-art mobile mammography unit, female radiological technologists who are board certified and hold advanced certification in mammography and interpretation of exam results by a dedicated breast board-certified radiologist.
“As a breast cancer survivor and 94.7 listener, it was important for me to attend the second annual Breast Cancer Bites and support the GWU Mammovan. DC has among the highest national rates of breast cancer diagnosis and mortality in the US, said attendee and breast cancer survivor, Stef Woods. “Annual mammograms are essential to ensure that breast cancer is caught early. The screenings that the GWU Mammovan make a difference in the lives of uninsured DC-area women.”
