Toshiba gets high marks for dropping the ball in Times Square, even if it was Waterford Crystal – dropping Waterford in any form is generally frowned upon, but this is not your grandma’s stemware.

This ball is a geodesic sphere 2 feet in diameter weighing 11,875 pounds covered with 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles which are bolted to 672 LED modules on the aluminum frame; illuminated by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LED modules.  Each LED module contains 48 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs — 12 red, 12 blue, 12 green, and 12 white for a total of 8,064 of each color and capable of creating a palette of more than 16 million vibrant colors and billions of patterns  – according to Toshiba.

Last year Lady Gaga kissed the ball. That means, of course, that her lips were sealed in Times Square for a year.  Just sayin’.
