“Rappers are like reporters,” said Marco Rubio about Biggie and Tupac when interviewed by BuzzFeed Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith at their first ever BuzzFeed Brews last night at The 201 Bar.

A little background on Biggie and Tupac: Christopher George Latore Wallace, best known as The Notorious B.I.G., was an American rapper and hip hop artist.  Wallace was noted for his “loose, easy flow”, dark semi-autobiographical lyrics and storytelling abilities.

He has certified sales of 17 million units in the United States alone.

On March 9, 1997, Wallace was killed by an unknown assailant in a drive-by-shooting in Los Angeles.

Tupac Shakur was an American rapper and actor and one of the best-selling music artists in the world.

The themes of most of Tupac’s songs are the violence and hardship in inner cities, racism, social problems, and conflicts with other rappers during the East Coast–West Coast hip hop rivalry.  Shakur was involved in an East Coast–West Coast rivalry after a major feud with East Coast rappers, producers and record-label staff members, most notably The Notorious B.I.G.

On September 7, 1996, Shakur was shot multiple times in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Wikepedia

We thought it was kind of an odd question to ask Rubio so we asked BuzzFeed’s Washington Bureau Chief John Stanton to explain:  “Well, he’s sort of a hip hop aficionado, as far as members of Congress go. And he’s been pretty public with his love of Pit Bull, who’s from Miami.”

We also wanted to know how Rubio came off, especially in this kind of hip environment.  Any surprises?

“I wouldn’t say there was a surprise, perse for me. I did think he really came across as this new brand of conservative that’s slowly abandoning some of the old ways of the movement.”
