While Hollywood on the Potomac interviews actors, producers, directors and screenwriters, we don’t do movie reviews and critiques. However, in light of the Oscars, we are going out on a limb and giving you predictions starting with Best Picture. The opinions are mine, not those of my colleagues who may disagree.
The nominees for Best Picture are: “12 Years a Slave” – “American Hustle” – “Captain Phillips” – “Dallas Buyers Club” – “Gravity” – “Her” – “Nebraska”- “Philomena” – “The Wolf of Wall Street”
We are doing this by the process of elimination and while the movie is still fresh in mind.
We’ll start with Her about a lonely man who has an unlikely relationship with his newly purchased operating system that’s designed to meet his every need.
Joaquin Phoenix
“Set in the Los Angeles of the slight future, the story follows Theodore Twombly, a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet “Samantha,” a bright, female voice, who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other.” Production Notes
The film was directed and produced by Spike Jonze and stars Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde and Scarlett Johansson….great director and great actors, but…….
While we like and get the premise of the film and also believe it is a highly likely possibility in the future, it was at times a bit silly-sad and slow moving – so, we’re taking it off the list. One down, eight to go.
