In the Best Picture category for The 88th Academy Awards 2016 that will take place on Sunday, February 28, today we cover The Big Short. “It’s a 2015 American biographical comedy-drama film directed and co-written by Adam McKay. It is based on the non-fiction 2010 book of the same name by Michael Lewis about the financial crisis of 2007–2008 which was triggered by the build-up of the housing market and the credit bubble.” Wikipedia. The film stars Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt. The film is nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor for Bale, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Here’s the take: Finally someone has put together a piece on the housing bubble that is sufficiently explanatory. Explaining the theory in childlike building blocks works for us. What was annoying were the outtake interruptions and the constant back and forth into different scenarios. Perhaps they could have been better spaced out so a viewer had time to digest the information better.
En fin: The acting was superb, and each actor was totally in character throughout. However, we are taking this out of the winners circle. We liked the previous flicks on similar subject matter like Wall Street with Michael Douglas and perhaps even Wolf of Wall Street with Leonardo di Caprio better. Oh, and in the totally irrelevant comments division – Brad Pitt looks better every year! Here’s a link to a previous piece by Hollywood on the Potomac.
