While congress was battling over the shutdown and debt ceiling crises just a few miles away, The Creative Coalition hosted a screening of The Dirties at the E Street Cinema.

The Dirties brings two critical issues to the forefront — bullying and gun violence.  Ironically and sadly on the news the same night, it was reported by police that two girls were arrested in connection with the death of 12-year-old Rebecca Sedwick who committed suicide last month after being the target of online bullying.  The bullying statistics of 2010 reveal that there are about 160,000 children that miss school every day out of fear of being bullied.

“The film embodies the type of content we identify for The Creative Coalition’s Spotlight Initiative, and we look forward to supporting a film that educates and inspires those who can influence positive changes to our current policy,” said Robin Bronk, CEO of The Creative Coalition.

The Indie hit brought out star Owen Williams and producer Matthew Miller together with Capitol Hill politicos and DC’s most prominent anti-bullying avengers including DC’S Mayors Office on Bullying Prevention Act, SEIU, U.S. Department of Education, and Congressional Caucus on Anti-Bullying. Other guests included actor Tray Chaney (“The Wire”), best-selling author Robin Stern (“The Gaslight Effect) and DC’s Senator Paul Strauss.

The-Dirties

The film follows two best friends who are filming a comedy about getting revenge on the bullies at their high school. One of them isn’t joking.

Director Kevin Smith had this to say about the making of the movie: “I’ve always wanted to say this about a movie I made and mean it, but never could. Now, thanks to The Dirties, I can. This is the most important film you will see all year. Matt Johnson has mashed-up the found footage film and the faux-documentary genres and crafted the most original, hypnotic, and human movie about a monster-in-the-making you will ever see. Not only is The Dirties an astonishingly great film, it has the stones to deal with some very real subject matter in a mature, important way. I’m crazy proud to be associated in any way with The Dirties – a landmark achievement in not just indie film, but cinema in general.”
